I was just about to ask a guest, “Who cut your hair?” Having noticed that his hair had been cut, and trying to find a way to relate, that was an option.
But not for long. My mind predicted the likely response would be, “Where the hell are you coming from? We don’t have money to cut his hair!” How daring I would be to ask anyone from this small American town where they cut their hair. They cut their hair themselves.
Then it hit me: this is an illustration of American poverty, when $20 per month per person is too much to pay, to cut your hair.
